Early Detection for Better Outcomes

What Are Oral
Cancer Screenings?

Oral cancer screenings are a crucial part of routine dental care, allowing for early detection of cancerous or precancerous lesions in the mouth. At Briggs Family Dental, our dentist performs a visual and tactile examination of your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and other oral tissues as part of your regular checkups.

We look for any unusual changes, such as lumps, bumps, sores, or discoloration. Early detection is key to successful treatment, as oral cancer can progress quickly and become life-threatening if left unchecked. If we notice any concerning signs, we may recommend further testing or refer you to a specialist for a definitive diagnosis.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Benefits of Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer caught early has excellent outcomes. Regular screenings identify suspicious changes before symptoms develop, enabling prompt treatment when success rates are highest and protecting overall health beyond just teeth.
Catch Cancer Early for Better Outcomes
Like all cancers, oral cancer is most treatable when detected early. Regular screenings help identify abnormal cells before they spread, improving your prognosis.
Many oral cancers don’t cause pain or obvious symptoms until advanced stages. Screenings allow you to take a proactive role in your health, even if you feel fine.
Your dentist can check for signs of oral cancer during your routine exam. It’s a simple step that provides invaluable peace of mind.
Identifying oral cancer early often means less aggressive treatments, fewer side effects, and a shorter recovery. Prioritize screenings to protect your quality of life.
Advanced oral cancers can spread to the jaw, throat, and lymph nodes, causing pain and disfigurement. Preserve the health and appearance of your face with early detection.
Oral cancer can impair the function of your mouth and jaw, making it difficult to enjoy meals, communicate, and smile. Proactive screenings help safeguard these essential abilities.

Who Are Oral Cancer Screenings For?

While oral cancer can affect anyone, certain factors can increase your risk. Screenings are especially important for older adults, tobacco users, and those with other high-risk habits who want to catch any abnormalities before they become life-threatening.

Patients Over 40

The risk of oral cancer increases with age, making regular screenings essential for middle-aged and older adults.

Tobacco Users

Smoking or chewing tobacco significantly raises your chances of developing oral cancer and warrants more frequent checkups.

Patients with Other Risk Factors

A history of excessive sun exposure, alcohol consumption, or HPV can also increase your oral cancer risk and need for screenings.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Our Oral Cancer
Screening Process

At Briggs Family Dental, we believe that early detection is key to fighting oral cancer. That’s why we include a thorough oral cancer screening as part of every routine checkup.
imagege2
1

Visual & Tactile Examination

We begin with a careful visual assessment of your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and entire oral cavity. We look for any abnormalities in color, texture, or symmetry that could indicate early warning signs. We also gently feel for lumps, bumps, or areas of thickening.
2

Advanced Screening Technology

In addition to our visual exam, we use advanced screening tools like VELscope to detect abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye. This painless, non-invasive technology uses a special light to highlight areas of concern for further evaluation.
3

Proactive Follow-Up Care

If we identify any areas of concern during your screening, we take a proactive approach to follow-up care. We may recommend more frequent checkups, additional imaging, or a biopsy to determine if treatment is needed. We’re here to guide you through every step of the process with compassion and support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oral Cancer Screenings FAQs

Early detection concerns lead to questions about screening frequency and risk factors. Here, patients find important information about oral cancer examinations and warning signs. Learn how routine screenings provide peace of mind and potentially life-saving early detection.

What is oral cancer?

Oral cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the tissues of the mouth or throat. It can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx (throat). Common symptoms of oral cancer include persistent sores, lumps, or patches in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, and changes in the way your teeth fit together. At Briggs Family Dental, we recommend regular oral cancer screenings to help detect any abnormalities early.

While anyone can develop oral cancer, certain factors can increase your risk. These include tobacco use (smoking or chewing), excessive alcohol consumption, prolonged sun exposure to the lips, a weakened immune system, and certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). At Briggs Family Dental, we encourage all of our patients, especially those with increased risk factors, to undergo regular oral cancer screenings.

At Briggs Family Dental, we include oral cancer screenings as part of your routine dental check-ups. We recommend that most patients visit us every six months for a comprehensive exam, which includes an oral cancer screening. However, if you have a history of oral cancer or are at higher risk, Dr. Briggs may recommend more frequent screenings. We’ll work with you to determine the appropriate screening schedule based on your individual needs and risk factors.

During an oral cancer screening at Briggs Family Dental, Dr. Briggs will perform a thorough visual and physical examination of your mouth, throat, and surrounding areas. He will look for any abnormalities, such as sores, lumps, or discolored patches of tissue. Dr. Briggs will also feel for any unusual bumps or thickenings in your mouth, jaw, and neck. The screening is quick, painless, and can be done during your regular dental check-up.

If Dr. Briggs notices any abnormalities during your oral cancer screening at Briggs Family Dental, he may recommend additional testing to determine if the area of concern is cancerous. This may include a biopsy, where a small sample of tissue is removed and sent to a laboratory for analysis. If the biopsy confirms the presence of cancer, Dr. Briggs will work with you and a team of specialists to develop an appropriate treatment plan. Early detection and prompt treatment are essential for the best possible outcome.

Many dental insurance plans cover oral cancer screenings as part of your routine dental check-ups. However, coverage can vary depending on your specific plan and provider. At Briggs Family Dental, our knowledgeable team will work with you to understand your insurance benefits and maximize your coverage. If you have any questions about your insurance or payment options, please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re here to help you navigate the financial aspects of your dental care.

While not all cases of oral cancer can be prevented, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. These include avoiding tobacco products, limiting alcohol consumption, protecting your lips from excessive sun exposure, and maintaining good oral hygiene habits. At Briggs Family Dental, we encourage our patients to adopt healthy lifestyles and attend regular dental check-ups, which include oral cancer screenings, to help prevent and detect oral cancer in its earliest stages.

Yes, it’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of oral cancer and to contact Briggs Family Dental if you notice any concerning changes in your mouth. These may include persistent sores or patches that don’t heal, lumps or thickenings in the mouth or throat, difficulty swallowing or speaking, and changes in the way your teeth fit together. If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with Dr. Briggs right away for further evaluation.

Oral cancer screenings are an essential part of early detection, but they are not foolproof. Some cancers may be too small or hidden to detect during a visual and physical examination. That’s why it’s crucial to attend regular screenings at Briggs Family Dental and to be aware of any changes in your mouth between appointments. If Dr. Briggs suspects an area of concern, he may recommend additional testing, such as a biopsy, to confirm or rule out the presence of cancer.

If your oral cancer screening at Briggs Family Dental does not reveal any abnormalities, Dr. Briggs will recommend that you continue with your regular dental check-ups and at-home oral hygiene routine. If any areas of concern are identified, Dr. Briggs will discuss the next steps with you, which may include additional testing or referral to a specialist. Our team will provide support and guidance throughout the process, ensuring that you understand your diagnosis and treatment options. Remember, early detection and prompt treatment are key to achieving the best possible outcome.

Patient Reviews

Hear Why Families Choose Us Again and Again

Our patients consistently describe feeling welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their care decisions. From routine visits to complete smile transformations, these stories reflect our commitment to honest, compassionate dentistry.
Dr. Briggs and his staff stepped up to the plate, and helped to resolve my tooth pain issue. I have been dealing with breast cancer since Dec 2024, and was not able to be seen for regular, preventative dental care. I was also, not a patient of theirs, but they took care of me, and made sure that each step, of each procedure, was explained to me. Dr. Briggs and his staff treated me with the utmost respect and dignity. I am happy to say, I am now a regular patient of Dr. Briggs. I would definitely recommend them to my friends and family members!!

I have been going to Dr. Briggs and his staff for 2 years . Prior to that I had not been to the dentist in 15 plus years because of bad experiences. Dr. Briggs and his staff were very comforting and professional . I actually look forward to going to him and his staff. I highly recommended this business !!!!

The absolute best dental care in the valley! I had an abscessed tooth causing a lot of pain. The dental team went above and beyond to meet all my needs. Calling around to different oral surgery offices to get me immediate care. Within hours of calling Dr Briggs office , I not only had an appointment at Dr Briggs later that day but after my appointment with them they got me into an oral surgery specialist the following day! The ladies in the office are so amazing! I went from scared with tears in my eyes, to all smiles and laughs because of these ladies! If you’re hesitant about a dentist as I have been, this is the place for you! They REALLY care! ❤️‍🩹👏🏼🥰🦷🫶🏼
