Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Emergencies FAQs

Urgent dental situations create immediate questions about appropriate response and available care. Find critical information about recognizing emergencies and taking proper action. Quick answers help patients know when immediate treatment prevents permanent damage.

What is considered a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to save a tooth, alleviate severe pain, or stop ongoing tissue bleeding. Some common examples of dental emergencies include:

  • Severe toothache or dental pain
  • Chipped, cracked, or fractured teeth
  • Knocked-out or partially dislodged teeth
  • Lost fillings, crowns, or bridges
  • Soft tissue injuries to the lips, tongue, or cheeks
  • Abscesses or infections in the mouth
  • Prolonged bleeding after a dental procedure If you experience any of these symptoms or have any other concerns about your oral health, don’t hesitate to contact Briggs Family Dental right away. Our team is here to provide prompt, compassionate emergency dental care when you need it most.

If you find yourself in a dental emergency, the first step is to remain calm and assess the situation. Here are some general guidelines to follow:

  • For severe pain or swelling, take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed and apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce discomfort and inflammation.
  • If a tooth is chipped, cracked, or fractured, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling. Save any broken tooth fragments if possible.
  • If a tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown (the white part) and rinse it gently with water if it’s dirty. Do not scrub the tooth or remove any attached tissue fragments. If possible, try to reinsert the tooth into its socket and hold it in place with gauze or a clean cloth. If you can’t reinsert the tooth, place it in a container of milk or saliva and bring it with you to the dental office.
  • If you lose a filling, crown, or bridge, try to save the restoration if possible. You can temporarily cover the exposed tooth with dental cement or sugar-free gum until you can see Dr. Briggs.
  • For soft tissue injuries, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to control bleeding. After taking these initial steps, contact Briggs Family Dental right away to schedule an emergency appointment. Our team will provide further instructions and do everything we can to see you as soon as possible.

At Briggs Family Dental, we understand the importance of prompt treatment for dental emergencies. That’s why we strive to see emergency patients as quickly as possible, often on the same day you contact our office. When you call to schedule your emergency appointment, our team will assess your situation and provide guidance on how to manage your symptoms until you can be seen. We’ll also do our best to accommodate your schedule and find a time that works best for you. If your emergency occurs outside of our regular office hours, please follow the instructions provided on our voicemail to reach Dr. Briggs or a member of our team for further guidance.

During your emergency dental appointment at Briggs Family Dental, our primary focus will be on relieving your pain, stabilizing your condition, and preventing further damage to your oral health. The specific steps involved in your emergency treatment will depend on the nature and severity of your problem, but may include:

  • A thorough examination of your mouth, teeth, and gums
  • Digital x-rays or other diagnostic imaging to assess the extent of the damage or infection
  • Necessary treatments, such as fillings, crowns, root canal therapy, or extractions, to address the underlying problem
  • Prescriptions for pain medication or antibiotics to manage discomfort and prevent or treat infection
  • Detailed instructions for at-home care to promote healing and prevent further complications Throughout your emergency visit, Dr. Briggs and our team will keep you informed, answer your questions, and provide the compassionate, personalized care you need to find relief and restore your oral health.

In many cases, follow-up appointments may be necessary after your initial emergency dental visit to complete your treatment and ensure proper healing. The need for follow-up care will depend on the nature and severity of your emergency, as well as the specific treatments performed. For example:

  • If you receive a temporary filling or crown during your emergency visit, you may need to return to our office for a permanent restoration.
  • If you undergo root canal therapy, you may need a follow-up appointment to complete the procedure and place a permanent crown.
  • If you have a severe infection or abscess, Dr. Briggs may recommend follow-up visits to monitor your healing and ensure the infection has cleared. Our team at Briggs Family Dental will provide you with detailed instructions for any necessary follow-up care and work with you to schedule appointments at your convenience. We’re committed to providing ongoing support and guidance to help you achieve and maintain optimal oral health.

Coverage for dental emergencies varies depending on your specific insurance plan and the nature of your emergency. Many dental insurance plans provide some level of coverage for emergency treatments, such as fillings, crowns, or extractions, subject to your plan’s deductibles, co-pays, and annual maximums. However, some plans may have limitations or exclusions for certain types of emergency care. At Briggs Family Dental, our knowledgeable team will work with you to understand your insurance benefits and maximize any available coverage for your emergency treatment. We’ll also provide you with a detailed cost estimate and discuss financing options to help make your care as affordable as possible.

If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort while waiting for your emergency dental appointment, there are several steps you can take to manage your symptoms at home:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, as directed to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your cheek near the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time to help numb the pain and reduce swelling.
  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt mixed with 8 ounces of warm water) to soothe irritated tissues and promote healing.
  • Avoid chewing on the affected side of your mouth and stick to soft, cool foods to prevent further irritation or damage.
  • If you have a lost filling or crown, you can temporarily cover the exposed tooth with dental cement or sugar-free gum to protect it until your appointment. Remember, while these at-home measures can help provide temporary relief, they should not be considered a substitute for professional dental care. If your pain is severe, persists, or worsens, contact Briggs Family Dental right away for further guidance and to schedule an emergency appointment.

While not all dental emergencies can be prevented, there are several steps you can take to reduce your risk of experiencing an urgent dental problem:

  • Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and using an antiseptic mouthwash.
  • Wear a mouthguard during sports activities or if you grind your teeth at night (bruxism) to protect your teeth from injury or excessive wear.
  • Avoid chewing on hard objects, such as ice, popcorn kernels, or pen caps, which can crack or chip your teeth.
  • Don’t use your teeth as tools to open packages, cut threads, or perform other non-dental tasks.
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings at Briggs Family Dental to detect and treat potential problems early, before they become emergencies.
  • Address any dental pain, sensitivity, or other concerns promptly by contacting our office for guidance and treatment. By following these preventive measures and maintaining open communication with Dr. Briggs and our team, you can help keep your smile healthy and minimize the risk of dental emergencies.

If you experience a dental emergency while traveling, it’s essential to seek professional care as soon as possible to alleviate pain and prevent further damage to your oral health. Here are some steps you can take:

  • Contact Briggs Family Dental: If you’re traveling within the United States, call our office for guidance on how to manage your emergency until you can return home for treatment. We may be able to recommend a local dentist or provide advice on temporary relief measures.
  • Seek local emergency dental care: If you’re unable to reach our office or are traveling internationally, research local emergency dental clinics or hospitals that offer dental services. Many cities have dental practices that specialize in treating urgent cases for out-of-town patients.
  • Manage symptoms until you can receive care: Follow the at-home care guidelines discussed earlier to manage pain, swelling, or bleeding until you can see a dentist. If you have a lost filling or crown, you can temporarily cover the exposed tooth with dental cement or sugar-free gum.
  • Follow up with Briggs Family Dental: Once you return home, schedule an appointment with Dr. Briggs to ensure your emergency treatment was successful and to discuss any necessary follow-up care. Remember, prompt treatment is crucial in dental emergencies, so don’t delay seeking professional care, even if you’re away from home.

While dental emergencies are often unexpected, being prepared can help you manage the situation more effectively and minimize stress. Here are some tips to help you prepare for potential dental emergencies:

  • Keep Briggs Family Dental’s contact information readily available, including our office phone number and email address, so you can quickly get in touch with us when needed.
  • Familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of common dental emergencies, such as severe pain, swelling, bleeding, or tooth damage, so you can recognize when to seek immediate care.
  • Assemble a small dental emergency kit to keep at home or take with you when traveling. This kit should include items like:
    • Our office contact information
    • Gauze or clean cloths to control bleeding
    • Dental floss to remove debris stuck between teeth
    • Dental cement or sugar-free gum to temporarily cover a lost filling or crown
    • Over-the-counter pain relievers (ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
    • A small container with a lid to store a knocked-out tooth or tooth fragments
  • Maintain regular dental check-ups and cleanings at Briggs Family Dental to keep your mouth healthy and identify potential issues before they become emergencies. By being prepared and knowing what to do in a dental emergency, you can help ensure the best possible outcome for your oral health. Remember, the team at Briggs Family Dental is always here to provide prompt, compassionate care when you need it most.

I had a toothache which I had gotten antibiotic for. I called Briggs because they are right next door to us. They worked me in and asked me after looking at it whether I wanted it cared for yet, that day after I was expecting to need to come back another day. I was impressed with the efficiency .

I was accepted as a new patient and was seen by the doctor right away. My previous dentist could not be reached (after 3 attempts) to share x-rays. Dr. Nauss’s assistant very efficiently got whole mouth x-rays without further wait. I left with a plan for my dental work, including insurance estimates. They scheduled my next appointment to my satisfaction. I’m well pleased with the professionalism of the entire team at Briggs Family Dentistry Just got the semi annual cleaning with Brittany. I actually enjoyed the process and recommend her for your next cleaning. .
