Frequently Asked Questions
Oral cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the tissues of the mouth or throat. It can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx (throat). Common symptoms of oral cancer include persistent sores, lumps, or patches in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, and changes in the way your teeth fit together. At Briggs Family Dental, we recommend regular oral cancer screenings to help detect any abnormalities early.
While anyone can develop oral cancer, certain factors can increase your risk. These include tobacco use (smoking or chewing), excessive alcohol consumption, prolonged sun exposure to the lips, a weakened immune system, and certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). At Briggs Family Dental, we encourage all of our patients, especially those with increased risk factors, to undergo regular oral cancer screenings.
At Briggs Family Dental, we include oral cancer screenings as part of your routine dental check-ups. We recommend that most patients visit us every six months for a comprehensive exam, which includes an oral cancer screening. However, if you have a history of oral cancer or are at higher risk, Dr. Briggs may recommend more frequent screenings. We’ll work with you to determine the appropriate screening schedule based on your individual needs and risk factors.
During an oral cancer screening at Briggs Family Dental, Dr. Briggs will perform a thorough visual and physical examination of your mouth, throat, and surrounding areas. He will look for any abnormalities, such as sores, lumps, or discolored patches of tissue. Dr. Briggs will also feel for any unusual bumps or thickenings in your mouth, jaw, and neck. The screening is quick, painless, and can be done during your regular dental check-up.
If Dr. Briggs notices any abnormalities during your oral cancer screening at Briggs Family Dental, he may recommend additional testing to determine if the area of concern is cancerous. This may include a biopsy, where a small sample of tissue is removed and sent to a laboratory for analysis. If the biopsy confirms the presence of cancer, Dr. Briggs will work with you and a team of specialists to develop an appropriate treatment plan. Early detection and prompt treatment are essential for the best possible outcome.
Many dental insurance plans cover oral cancer screenings as part of your routine dental check-ups. However, coverage can vary depending on your specific plan and provider. At Briggs Family Dental, our knowledgeable team will work with you to understand your insurance benefits and maximize your coverage. If you have any questions about your insurance or payment options, please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re here to help you navigate the financial aspects of your dental care.
While not all cases of oral cancer can be prevented, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. These include avoiding tobacco products, limiting alcohol consumption, protecting your lips from excessive sun exposure, and maintaining good oral hygiene habits. At Briggs Family Dental, we encourage our patients to adopt healthy lifestyles and attend regular dental check-ups, which include oral cancer screenings, to help prevent and detect oral cancer in its earliest stages.
Yes, it’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of oral cancer and to contact Briggs Family Dental if you notice any concerning changes in your mouth. These may include persistent sores or patches that don’t heal, lumps or thickenings in the mouth or throat, difficulty swallowing or speaking, and changes in the way your teeth fit together. If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with Dr. Briggs right away for further evaluation.
Oral cancer screenings are an essential part of early detection, but they are not foolproof. Some cancers may be too small or hidden to detect during a visual and physical examination. That’s why it’s crucial to attend regular screenings at Briggs Family Dental and to be aware of any changes in your mouth between appointments. If Dr. Briggs suspects an area of concern, he may recommend additional testing, such as a biopsy, to confirm or rule out the presence of cancer.
If your oral cancer screening at Briggs Family Dental does not reveal any abnormalities, Dr. Briggs will recommend that you continue with your regular dental check-ups and at-home oral hygiene routine. If any areas of concern are identified, Dr. Briggs will discuss the next steps with you, which may include additional testing or referral to a specialist. Our team will provide support and guidance throughout the process, ensuring that you understand your diagnosis and treatment options. Remember, early detection and prompt treatment are key to achieving the best possible outcome.
